Against the backdrop of significant problems that still haunt the Greek railway and inconvenience the passenger public, the new entity Hellenic Railways SA has now been officially established, which will “run” at the pace of the private sector and with greater flexibility in both recruitment and the assignment of projects, supplies and services.

The successor to the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) – which also incorporates ERGOSE and GAIAOSE in the department concerning the management of rolling stock – acquired new management a few days ago, following the departure and replacement of Panagiotis Terezakis, and is now led by the organization’s former interim CEO, Christos Palios.

At the same time, the problems on the railway for the passenger public seem endless, with many of them attributed not only to the infrastructure but also to the rolling stock, raising questions about the maintenance of the trains that operate on the railway network.

In addition to the established delays in routes, another incident that resulted in the immobilization of a train occurred in recent days. This time it concerned a herd of animals that mounted the tracks in great numbers, resulting in the Intercity 55 train of Hellenic Train (Thessaloniki – Athens) being dragged and ultimately temporarily immobilized right after the Aliartos area in Viotia.

The collision caused minor material damage to the train, without any injuries. After the completion of the checks, the train carrying 400 passengers continued its route to Athens, with a delay of 95 minutes.

However, the company reminded that the tracks are not fenced, however OSE stated that as is the case in other countries, barbed wire cannot be placed throughout the network, except in points near cities.
