A 78-year-old man died on Wednesday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a fall into a water well at his home in Almiros, southwest of Volos, in eastern mainland Greece.
The incident occurred in the morning when the man reportedly slipped and fell into the well, estimated to be at least 15 meters deep. Firefighters, medics, and a doctor rushed to the scene, launching a complex rescue operation under difficult conditions.
Despite sustaining head and body injuries, the victim remained conscious and was able to communicate with rescuers during the effort. Members of the EMAL disaster response team descended into the well, strapped up the man, and had him lifted to the surface.
He was immediately transferred to hospital but died several hours later as a result of his injuries.
