A 27-year-old man has reportedly confessed to carrying out a murder on the orders of a jailed mobster last month for a 15,000 euro payout. The shooting took place on August 18 in downtown Athens’ Agios Panteleimonas district and the victim was a man aged 47.
State broadcaster ERT said the suspect had been paid to carry out the execution by a member of the Albanian mafia, who was involved in a dispute with the victim’s brother over drug trafficking and is currently in prison for murder and other serious crimes. The victim’s brother is also said to be in prison.
The 27-year-old reportedly shot the victim once and then fled the scene on a stolen motorcycle, which he later abandoned, leaving by taxi. Police investigators say they have found the weapon – which appears to have jammed after the first shot – the motorcycle and the clothing he was wearing at the time of the murder during raids on three Athens properties connected to the suspect. They also seized 2,700 euros in cash and quantities of various drugs in the operation.
The murder victim had been arrested in the past for involvement in a pickpocketing gang.
