Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated on Sunday that he is not considering any changes to Greece’s electoral law ahead of the next general elections in 2027.
The comment came amid reports that several of Mitsotakis’ interlocutors are promoting the idea due to the prolonged stagnation of ruling New Democracy below 30% in opinion polls and tense relations with other parties, which limit the potential for coalition partnerships.
“The answer I give you is the same. I have absolutely no intention of changing the electoral law,” he told journalists at a press conference in Thessaloniki where he answered questions about his announced reform plans.
“I believe in single-party governments and the Greeks have trusted us twice to govern the country. Absolute majority seemed difficult even before the 2023 elections. Right now, the 2027 elections are not my first concern. When you implement a plan with a four-year horizon, you expect it to pay off in the long term. No one can know the [political] landscape in 2027,” he added.
