Seán Loftus, who at one time changed his name to Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus, campaigned over many years to protect Dublin Bay.

Tireless environmental campaigner, Dublin city Councillor, Lord Mayor of Dublin and TD, Seán Loftus will be remembered for his lifelong fight to protect Dublin Bay.

Born in Dublin in 1927 Seán Loftus qualified as a barrister and became involved in politics in 1961. He was the founder of the Christian Democrat Movement. He became best known for a campaign against a proposal to build an oil refinery in Dublin Bay. He also proposed that Ireland should claim oil reserves off Rockall. He changed his name to Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus to highlight his concerns.

He spent 25 years as a Dublin city councillor, and was a TD for Dublin North East from 1981 to 1982. He was the Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1995 to 1996. In more recent years, he was a member of Dublin Bay Watch.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Gerry Breen paid tribute to Seán Loftus and his environmental work.
