Clashes erupted Tuesday night at a temporary migrant accommodation facility in Agyia, in Crete’s Hania region, authorities said.
According to public broadcaster ERT, the unrest began when some migrants demanded to leave the facility, while other reports suggested disputes over food triggered the clashes.
During the incidents, parts of the facility were damaged, with individuals allegedly dismantling the main electrical panel and removing ventilation grilles. Coast guard and police units intervened to restore order.
The facility is overcrowded amid a recent spike in arrivals from North Africa. Following the departure of 166 migrants the previous night, 1,013 people remained at the site.
