Greece missed out on the Eurobasket final losing painfully to Turkey in Friday’s semifinal with a 94-68 score in Latvia, and will have to regroup to fight it out with Finland for the bronze medal.
Turkey appeared far better prepared for the semifinal and led from start to finish with an emphatic performance that included the drastic containment of Greece’s superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Greeks appeared like a team without direction and self-confidence, committing one turnover after another and missing even free shots, while their defense suffered from the slow return of players from offense.
Turkey led 7-0 and kept increasing its distance as the game went on. Its coach, Ergin Ataman, had the answer to every trick of the Greek team, becoming the first coach in the tournament to trap the “Greek Freak,” scorer of just 12 points on the night, against a tournament average of 30 points.
The first half finished 49-31 and the third period brought Turkey’s lead up to 26 points (64-38), before closing 72-51.
Kostas Sloukas appeared to be fighting on his own at times, finishing the game with 15 points.
The final period just maintained the same picture without the Greeks being able to cut the distance and threaten the Turks, who added insult to injury with a 26-point result, in what was their first victory over Greece in half a century.
Greece still has a chance for a medal, but must overcome the spectacularly improved Finland in the bronze-medal match. Turkey will contest the Eurobasket final with Germany.
