Cyprus must “prove in practice” that it really wants the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a planned subsea power cable linking Greece and Cyprus, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure that there is cooperation from the Cypriot government to move the project forward. But Nicosia must also prove that it wants this project,” he told journalists during a press conference at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), where the prime minister elaborated on the government’s future political and economic agenda.

He said that “Cyprus is the major beneficiary of this project and Greece rushed to promote it to help it,” because Nicosia is “isolated” in terms of its energy supply, adding that for Greece, other interconnections, such as the one planned with Egypt, are a priority.

“I estimate that we will soon have clear view of what [Cyprus] wants and means,” he said.
